Rain delays bring out the team meteorologists

As the tarp laid over the basepaths at Target Field on Thursday, July 13, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” could be heard blasting over the loudspeakers.

Matt Hoy has seen it. In fact, he began preparing for the eventual rainfall days that would hit Minneapolis days before the storm arrived.

Hoy, the senior vice president of operations, calls himself a “closeted meteorologist” thanks in large part to the time he spends monitoring the weather before each home game.

“Ever since we moved into Target Field, I spent a gazillion hours looking into my computer screen studying the weather,” Hoy said.

Target Field has experienced 38 delayed games, 23 postponed games and one suspended game since its inception in 2010.

Hoy said it’s typical to begin looking at the weather around two to three days before the beginning of a homestand.

“It’s not an exact science, but you try to start watching and begin figuring things out, giving baseball people a heads so they know if they will be able to get their pregame work in,” he said.

Hoy works alongside a full-time meteorologist employed by the Twins as well as the groundskeeper to monitor the weather leading up to the game and make the decision on whether or not to delay or postpone a game.

Hoy said he knew it was going to be a questionable day before he even stepped into the stadium Thursday.

“Before I left my house this morning I had my computer open in the kitchen looking at the weather, I thought we might have some challenges this weekend and obviously we did.”
